Reformation and Rehabilitation denies allegations of the family of an inmate Zuhair Jassim
Director-General of Reformation and Rehabilitation asserted on Monday that allegations circulated on social media attributed to the family of an inmate Zuhair Mohammed Abas, 40, including claims that he was exposed to "Brutal torture" are unrealistic and baseless.
He highlighted that he receives his full rights stated in the reformation and rehabilitation organisations law and its regulations, including medical care and phone calls.
He said that the Reformation and Rehabilitation Directorate and its administration power transferred him to another building after his incitement involvement was confirmed. The inmate also created many problems between inmates. Some administration procedures were taken against him per the law.
It was clarified on January 14 that the inmate is serving three life imprisonment sentences in many terror cases and isn't in solitary confinement. The clarification also highlighted that because of COVID-19, the visitations were stopped and replaced with video calls, but he refused to call his family.
The Director-General said that the inmate, after the statement's publication, agreed to call his family and the centre allowed the call.
He said that the department had invited the National Institute for Human Rights to investigate the allegations. A delegation visited the inmate, and the institute stated on January 13 that the delegation met the inmate in a room outside the cell out of consideration to his privacy rights. The meeting took place away from representatives from the management of the centre and without handcuffs.
The institute highlighted that the inmate enjoys his full rights states in the centre's regulations and receives medical care if required. The inmate highlighted during the meeting that he had no demands.
To promote transparency, the Director-General referred the allegations about the inmates to the Ombudsman to investigate them and evaluate the inmates' situation and the services and healthcare he receives per the law and human rights principles.
