Response to reports by Qatari Al Jazeera channel about inmate Zuhair Jassim Mohammed Abas
Concerning reports by Qatari Al Jazeera channel, websites and social media about the situation of an inmate Zuhair Jassim Mohammed Abas, 40, sentenced to life imprisonment in several terror cases, the General Directorate of Reformation and Rehabilitation asserted on Thursday that these reports are baseless.
It highlighted that the inmate isn’t in solitary confinement and the coronavirus pandemic requires replacing visitation with visual calls, in which each inmate has three calls a week. The directorate highlighted that the inmate refuses to call his family and his last visual call was on 7 July 2020.
It also highlighted that his health condition is normal, and he receives his full rights similar to other inmates per the reformation and rehabilitation organisations law and regulations. He is also covered by rules and systems that covered all inmates without exceptions.
The General Directorate of Reformation and Rehabilitation has invited the National Institute for Human Rights to visit the inmate and check his condition. The department emphasised that it carries humanitarian and legal duties toward any inmate with transparency and integrity. It called upon the public to seek information from official sources and avoid malicious rumours.
